This week marks one of the most emotional and significant times on the Israeli calendar — Yom HaZikaron, Israel’s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and victims of terror. At Migdal Ohr, Memorial Week was opened with a powerful approach: one that acknowledges profound grief while nurturing resilience, unity, and hope.
In the face of a painful and ongoing reality – the loss of brave soldiers, the trauma of terror attacks, and the continued captivity of hostages – the staff at Migdal Ohr have developed a balanced and deeply thoughtful response. Their goal is to create space for authentic emotional expression while guiding students toward faith, strength, and national unity.
Connecting Through Memory and Values
At the Pninat Ohr elementary school, Memorial Week began with an inspiring project centered on the theme of interpersonal relationships. The initiative, titled “Connected Hands”.
This beautiful image formed the basis of a school-wide initiative that highlighted the immense spiritual power of Jewish unity. Each class created artistic displays using linked hands as a symbol of solidarity and mutual responsibility. They were also assigned a Mishnah from Pirkei Avot focused on human relationships, which they brought to life through short, meaningful performances.
In a moving example of peer mentorship, older students served as guides and role models for younger ones. They worked together on the projects, fostering a deeper sense of care, giving, and shared purpose across age groups.
All the students gathered to present their work – reading their chosen Mishnah, explaining the meaning behind their displays, and reinforcing the timeless values of kindness, connection, and community. The day was a deeply emotional and unifying experience, reinforcing the values that define Migdal Ohr’s educational philosophy.
Art as Expression of Remembrance and Hope
At the Afikei Ohr Youth Village, students in the art programme began working on a powerful series of paintings exploring the themes of memory, loss, and hope. Each artwork reflected their personal journeys through pain, fear, and faith – expressing the difficult balance between mourning and the unrelenting will to live, create, and believe in a better future.
The act of creating these works allowed the students to process their feelings in a constructive and meaningful way, drawing strength from one another and from the enduring spirit of the Jewish people.
Faith in Action
At Migdal Ohr, Memorial Week is not only a time of solemn reflection but also a time to strengthen emotional resilience and the values that hold us together – unity, compassion, and the unwavering belief in the future of Israel.
May the memory of our fallen heroes be a blessing, and may we merit to see peace, healing, and redemption speedily in our days.
