From Trauma to Triumph: How Animal Therapy Transforms Lives at Migdal Ohr

At Migdal Ohr, our commitment to the well-being of children who have experienced significant hardships is unwavering. Many of the children in our care come from at-risk situations, have faced abuse, are orphaned, or have lived on the streets. Recently, many have experienced the impact of the ongoing war since October 7th and have been exposed to atrocities like no other.

These traumatic experiences often leave deep emotional scars. To address these, we have developed a multifaceted approach to healing at Migdal Ohr. One of the most effective components is our animal therapy programme. This programme provides comfort and companionship and is crucial to our children’s emotional and psychological recovery.

Building Foundations of Trust and Security
Creating a safe space is the first step in helping our multitude of children heal. These spaces are environments where they feel protected, valued, and understood. Our animal therapy programme plays a crucial role in this. The presence of animals provides a comforting and non-judgmental atmosphere that allows children to open up and heal.

Animals have a unique ability to connect profoundly and emotionally with humans. They offer unconditional love and companionship, which can be incredibly therapeutic for children who have experienced trauma. Migdal Ohr’s animal therapy programme includes horses, dogs, cats, and guinea pigs. Each animal is carefully selected and trained to interact with children in ways that promote healing and emotional growth.

Healing Through Animal Companionship
Our expert facilitators of this programme and our psychologists have explained that animal therapy offers numerous benefits for children who have faced adversity. Here are some of the key ways it helps:

  1. Emotional Healing: Animals can help children express emotions they may find difficult to articulate. The simple act of petting a dog or holding a rabbit can provide a sense of calm and comfort. This non-verbal communication allows children to release pent-up emotions and feel understood without needing words.
  2. Building Trust: Many of our children come from backgrounds where trust has been broken. Developing a bond with an animal helps them learn to trust again. Animals are consistent and reliable companions, offering a safe and predictable relationship that children can depend on.
  3. Reducing Anxiety: Interacting with animals has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress. The presence of a gentle, loving animal can lower heart rates and create a sense of calm. This is particularly beneficial for children who have experienced traumatic events and are prone to anxiety.
  4. Increasing Self-Esteem: Caring for an animal gives children a sense of responsibility and accomplishment. Successfully feeding, grooming, or training an animal can boost their confidence and self-esteem. This success reinforces the idea that they can make a positive impact on the world around them.
  5. Fostering Social Skills: Animals can also help children develop better social skills. Working together to care for animals teaches teamwork, cooperation, and communication, which are essential for building healthy relationships with others.

The impact of our animal therapy programme can be seen in the stories of the children who participate. One such story is that of Avi, a young boy who came to Migdal Ohr after spending several years in foster care. Avi was withdrawn and struggled with severe anxiety. He had difficulty trusting others and often isolated himself.

Something remarkable happened when Avi was introduced to Bella, one of our therapy dogs. Bella’s gentle nature and unwavering affection helped Avi feel safe. Over time, he began to open up, first to Bella and then to the staff and other children. The bond he formed with Bella became a bridge to forming human connections. Today, Avi is more confident, engages in group activities, and has made several friends.

Another powerful story is that of Leah, a teenage girl who had experienced physical and emotional abuse. Leah struggled to express her emotions and often felt overwhelmed by her past. Leah was introduced to a horse named Star. Working with Star, Leah learned to communicate her feelings through non-verbal cues. The trust and understanding she developed with Star helped her process her trauma and find a sense of peace. Leah now volunteers at our animal therapy centre, assisting other children to discover the healing power of animals.

Creating Hope and Growth

At Migdal Ohr, we believe every child deserves a chance to heal and thrive. Our animal therapy programme is a testament to the incredible resilience and growth capacity within each child. By providing a safe space and the companionship of animals, we offer our children a path to recovery and a future filled with hope.

The transformative power of animal therapy at Migdal Ohr cannot be overstated. It is a vital part of our mission to create safe spaces where children can heal, grow, and rediscover hope. The bonds formed with animals provide emotional healing, build trust, reduce anxiety, increase self-esteem, and foster social skills. Through the stories of children like Avi and Leah, we see the profound impact of this program.

At Migdal Ohr, we are dedicated to nurturing the potential within each child, helping them overcome their past and embrace a future full of possibilities. Our animal therapy programme is one of the many ways we make this vision a reality, proving that every child can find hope and growth with love, support, and a little help from our animal friends.
