A Glimpse into Hope: Our Visit to Zoharim Youth Village
By Jack and Rebecca, Members of Migdal Ohr UK’s Young Professionals Committee

When we embarked on our visit to Migdal Ohr’s Zoharim Youth Village, we expected to witness something special. What we didn’t anticipate was the deep sense of resilience, community, and hope that would touch us so profoundly. Zoharim Youth Village isn’t just a place where boys from troubled backgrounds go to live and learn; it’s a sanctuary where they rebuild their lives and futures, supported by an incredible community of staff, peers, and volunteers.

Jack’s Perspective: A Personal Connection

While I was in Israel recently, I had the opportunity to visit Zoharim Village, and the experience was more personal and moving than I could have imagined. Upon arriving, what struck me immediately was how it felt more like a close-knit family than a traditional boarding school. The boys – many of whom have faced significant challenges, including addiction or behavioural issues – were thriving in this nurturing environment.

It was particularly remarkable to hear firsthand how the staff has managed to provide such a stable and caring home for the boys, even during challenging periods like the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the most powerful moments for me was hearing directly from the boys themselves. Their stories were filled with gratitude for how Zoharim had turned their lives around. Many spoke of how they’d felt lost before coming to the village, but thanks to the support and guidance here, they had found a new sense of purpose and direction.

I was also impressed to learn about the enduring connection alumni maintain with the village. Several had returned after October 7th, when many of the staff were called up for their Miluim duty (army reserve service), to lend a hand. They came back not just to support the staff but to spend quality time with the current students, joining them for Shabbat and chagim. It was heartwarming to witness this long-lasting bond – proof that Zoharim’s impact extends far beyond a few short years of education.

Rebecca’s Reflection: A Heartfelt Experience
Visiting Zoharim Youth Village left a deep impression on me as well. I felt honoured to witness the incredible work being done for these boys, and the warmth and sense of community were palpable from the moment we stepped through the gates. The village is equipped with a range of facilities – everything from classrooms to a music room, a gym, and even a horse and sheep farm. But what stood out most to me was the boys themselves.

As we walked through the village and spoke with them, their gratitude was evident. They were eager to share their stories, excited to tell us how much Migdal Ohr had changed their lives. These boys aren’t just surviving; they’re thriving. The sense of belonging and friendship among them was inspiring, reminding me how critical a nurturing environment is to healing and growth. The staff at Zoharim have clearly fostered a space where these young men can flourish despite the challenges they’ve faced.

One of the most touching moments for me was when a boy told us how much he looked forward to visitors. For him, it wasn’t just about sharing his story but about feeling seen and supported by people who genuinely cared. The strength and resilience these boys showed left me in awe, and it was clear that the dedication of the Zoharim staff has created a lifeline for them – a place where they can grow, learn, and ultimately thrive.

A Lasting Impression
Our visit to Zoharim Youth Village was more than just an eye-opening experience; it was a profound reminder of the incredible impact that a supportive, loving community can have on vulnerable youth. In these uncertain times, Zoharim Youth Village continues to stand as a beacon of hope. The dedication of the staff and the resilience of the boys show us what’s possible when people come together to lift each other up.

As members of Migdal Ohr UK’s Young Professionals Committee, we feel incredibly proud to support this life-changing work. Zoharim Youth Village’s success stories are living proof of the difference that can be made when people invest in the lives of young individuals, and we are deeply inspired to continue playing our part in helping these boys find a path to a brighter future.

If our visit taught us anything, it’s that the work Migdal Ohr does is vital – and that now, more than ever, these boys need the stability and support that Zoharim provides. Together, we can help light their path to hope and opportunity.
