We had the pleasure this morning of speaking with a group of mums about the Migdal Ohr’s Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme. It was very moving and inspirational to share this time with some like-minded women.
Maurice and Mimi Benisty shared their wonderful experience of having their son’s Bar Mitzvah and twinning with the students from Migdal Ohr in Migdal HaEmek, Israel. Mimi said: ” It was the most beautiful day of my life”.
There are few things as endearing as the classic image of the Bar and Bat Mitzvah standing proudly, surrounded by adoring parents, happy family members and excited friends. This is probably the first time they have performed to such admiring audiences with a sense of responsibility that what they do and say, reflecting not only on them but on all those who were responsible for their upbringing.
For the Bar or Bat Mitzvah who grows up in poverty, the image and experience are not quite the same; it is incomplete. Often there is no celebration with family and friends, and frequently there is not even a pair of Tefillin for him or a Siddur for her. Instead of feeling proud, their emotions can run from embarrassment to resentment to disappointment and just plain sadness.
Every year at Migdal Ohr, there are about 35 boys and 80 girls who become bar or bat mitzvah, and this project brings such happiness to the recipients, helping them enjoy the excitement of reaching this milestone in their life, and empowering them to feel just like their Jewish peers.
Migdal Ohr’s Bar and Bat Mitzvah Twinning Programme offers an extraordinary opportunity for your child to experience first-hand the invaluable mitzvah of generous giving by sharing their Simcha with an underprivileged Bar or Bat Mitzvah child at Migdal Ohr. Your entire family can participate in a celebration on the actual Migdal Ha’Emek campus in Northern Israel or from your home anywhere in the world! This is a deeply meaningful experience and a truly rewarding gift.
