A Space to Create, A Place to Grow: The Art Programme at Afikei Ohr Youth Village

Table of Contents

At Migdal Ohr’s Afikei Ohr Youth Village, a powerful new initiative is taking shape, one that places creativity, expression, and personal growth at the heart of a child’s development.

Launched in March, this unique Art Programme is currently in its pilot phase, offering a carefully designed space where young people can explore, reflect, and grow through creative practice.

This initiative was developed in collaboration with Migdal Ohr UK and made possible through the vision and support of major donor Candida Gertler. The programme was born following a visit to Migdal HaEmek with Candida and has been thoughtfully shaped over the past three years. As the pilot progresses, there are plans to deepen and expand its impact even further.

A Meaningful Educational Journey

A meaningful educational process begins with space, time, and community.

Rooted in Migdal Ohr’s core values, the Art Programme provides a foundation for creativity, personal growth, and emotional development. It evolves organically, tailored to the pace, character, and abilities of each group, ensuring that every participant is met where they are.

Led by renowned artist Yifat Betzalel, the programme is a living, dynamic environment that responds intuitively to the needs emerging within each group.

More Than Art

Here, art is far more than the creation of objects.

It becomes:

  • A bridge between inner and outer worlds

  • A safe and trusted space for expression

  • A tool for developing deep thinking, listening, and reflection

Students are encouraged to experiment, take risks, and even fail, understanding that growth lies not only in outcomes but in the process itself.

An Educational Laboratory

The studio functions as an educational laboratory, a place where learning happens through doing.

Working in small groups with personal guidance, each young person is given the opportunity to:

  • Discover and develop their unique strengths

  • Engage in meaningful reflection

  • Build confidence within a supportive community

It is a space that invites pausing, thinking, and feeling essential elements in developing resilience and self-awareness.

Beyond the Canvas

Creative expression often opens doors to deeper emotional processes that may not surface in everyday conversation.

Within a sensitive and professional educational framework, the programme enables young people to explore these inner worlds safely – strengthening their emotional wellbeing alongside their creative skills.

Looking Ahead

While the programme remains in its pilot stage, its early impact is already evident.

It represents a moment of inspiration, pride, and light – and a powerful example of how thoughtful investment in education and creativity can transform young lives.

As the programme develops, we look forward to sharing more about its outcomes and future expansion.
