When Colours Become Confidence: The Light Art Exhibition at Afikei Ohr

The Afikei Ohr Campus of Migdal Ohr recently hosted the concluding exhibition of the Light Art project, celebrating an inspiring journey of creativity, resilience, personal growth and hope. More than an art programme, Light Art gave students the opportunity to express emotions that can often be difficult to put into words, build confidence and discover new strengths through creativity. The initiative was inspired by a dedicated Migdal Ohr donor who also serves as an art mentor and strongly believes in the power of art to support emotional wellbeing and strengthen the human spirit. She launched the project together with Mrs Amit Fraser, CEO of Migdal Ohr Europe, in collaboration with the Migdal Ohr Israel team led by Mrs Yehudit Chaimson.
The programme was delivered by acclaimed artist Yifat Bezalel, whose warmth, generosity and commitment enabled her to form a genuine connection with every student. Together with her assistant, artist Iris Peikovski, Yifat created a supportive environment in which the students felt safe to experiment, develop their skills and express themselves freely.
Due to the security situation in Israel, the programme was postponed several times and eventually began approximately two and a half months ago. Despite the limited timeframe, students in Grades 10 and 11 explored a range of artistic techniques and styles while discovering that they were capable of creating work they could be proud of.
The journey was not without challenges. Some students began the programme convinced that they could not draw, while others doubted whether they would be able to stay committed. Many of the young women at Afikei Ohr face significant personal challenges, making consistency and participation far from guaranteed.
Week after week, however, doubt gradually gave way to confidence. Fear turned into enjoyment, and the weekly art classes became an important source of stability, focus and self-expression. Some students even chose to give up other activities to ensure they would not miss a session.
The exhibition showcased the results of their hard work. Each student proudly stood beside her artwork, explaining the techniques she had learned, describing her creative process and sharing the message she hoped to convey.
Behind every colour, brushstroke and composition was a personal story of perseverance, hope and growth.
Among the guests were Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman and Mrs Grossman, the donor who initiated the project, Mrs Amit Fraser and Mrs Meirav, representing the Outset Foundation. Their presence made the occasion especially meaningful for the students.
The exhibition space itself was carefully designed to create a professional gallery experience. From the specially selected wall colours and professional framing to the precise positioning of each piece, every detail was thoughtfully planned by Yifat and Iris, who devoted many hours to transforming the space.
One of the most moving moments came when N., a Grade 12 graduate, shared her personal story. She spoke about how her years at Afikei Ohr had given her the tools to face challenges, believe in herself and discover strengths she had not previously recognised.
Next year, she will continue her studies in education and agricultural therapy. She has also received special permission from her seminary to continue attending art classes at Afikei Ohr so that she can further develop her artistic abilities.
Rabbi Grossman was deeply moved by the artwork and by the students’ progress. He took the time to view each piece, listen to each student’s explanation and personally encourage them. He expressed his hope that the programme would continue throughout the coming school year and that next year’s exhibition would be even larger.
The Light Art exhibition demonstrated what can happen when young people are given the opportunity, guidance and encouragement to explore their creativity.
The walls displayed far more than paintings. They reflected young women who had learned to trust their abilities, express themselves with confidence and, most importantly, believe in their own potential.
